Where to spend, where to save — a candid budget guide

Events reveal their budget in three places: seating, food, and light. Everything else — the escort cards, the favours, the aisle petals — is atmosphere. Beautiful, worthwhile, but supporting cast.

Spend on seating

Guests will spend four to six hours in that chair. A comfortable chiavari with a real cushion is money well spent; a plastic banquet chair is a false economy that shortens your reception by an hour.

Spend on light

Warm ambient lighting is the single decision that most changes how a room feels. Everything looks more expensive under good light — and cheaper under bad light.

Save on printed matter

Menus, table numbers, welcome signs — guests glance at these for two seconds. Keep them tasteful, but don't let a stationer double your décor bill.
